  3. when  reading  for a long period
  4. of time that stresses the eyes.

  6. *   Our   eyes    have    become
  7. accustomed   to  reading  little
  8. words on  a  printed  page.   We
  9. move  our eyes rapidly, hundreds
  10. of times a second when  reading.
  11. The  printing  on  a page is the
  12. size it is, because that is  the
  13. easiest  to  read.  If  you have
  14. fairly    good  eyes,  have  you
  15. noticed that large-print  child-
  16. ren's  books are actually harder
  17. to read?  This is  because  they
  18. force   us   to  move  our  eyes

  23. farther than we are used  to  to
  24. identify each word.  The same is
  25. true  of  the large letters on a
  26. computer screen.  Those  of  you
  27. who  have  EGA  or  VGA  systems
  28. might  try  the smaller 43 or 50
  29. line characters.   (I'm  experi-
  30. menting  with  it,  but  have no
  31. conclusions yet.)

  34. vertical   and  above  eye-level
  35. sometime.  Of course  your  arms
  36. will tire, but so will your neck
  37. and  eyes. We're not designed to
  38. concentrate in this position. We
  39. tend to lay  books  horizontally
